Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has become a global public health problem in recent decades, being one of the leading causes of death in the world. According to recently published data, the global COPD mortality rate remained virtually unchanged during 1990 to 2010: the average annual number of COPD deaths varies between 3 and 2.8 million [1]. In addition, COPD is the only disease, the deaths from which continue to increase: an average of 5–7 new cases per each 30–45 COPD-related deaths per year [2]. According to the WHO estimates, by 2020, COPD will rank third in the structure of mortality, surpassing all respiratory diseases [3]. This problem is especially urgent for Russia. Severe climatic conditions (in Western and Eastern Siberia), increasing public propensity for tobacco smoking, frequent respiratory infections, and the impact of professional pollutants on the body are the main factors predisposing to the development of COPD. Despite the development of the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (GOLD), the importance of which is difficult to overestimate, there is a clear need for a more in-depth analysis of all aspects of the disease.
