Gel technology was used to study the frequency and specificity of anti-erythrocyte antibodies in elderly and senile women. The study showed that the degree of sensitization in the elderly women was quite high (sensitization index, 1.6%). The combination of an age criterion and compromised obstetric and blood transfusion histories can be attributed to the high risk of post-transfusion hemolytic complications during surgical interventions.
