NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF DRY EYE SYNDROME IN AN INTERNIST’S PRACTICE

One of the common causes of worse quality of life and disability in the active population of almost all ages is dry eye syndrome (DES), a set of corneal and conjunctival changes caused by systematic tear film destabilization. In some cases DES causes severe changes in the cornea - its irreversible opacities, ulcerations, and even perforation. DES treatment and prevention with drugs that moisturize the ocular surface is the therapy of choice. There are a significant amount of tear substitutes on the market, but when making a choice, it is important to remember about the need for long-term treatment of the ocular surface and the safety of the components of an eye medication.
