Cognitive decline in elderly patients is rather frequently attributed to the development of senile dementia that is indeed depressive pseudodementia. Depression that is unassociated with degenerative diseases can be treated quite well. The patient’s comprehension of his condition, its reversibility, and risk of suicidal tendencies promotes better self-control and understanding of the non-fatality of the problem and shortens recovery time. The choice of antidepressant therapy in elderly patients is based on the presence of concomitant diseases and individual tolerance.
