Today, recombinant prourokinase is an indispensable Russian enzyme preparation in ophthalmology. Gemase, the active ingredient of which is a human recombinant prourokinase, is capable of quickly eliminating massive hemorrhages into the vitreous body, retina and anterior chamber of the eye. The drug is widely used in hemorrhagic forms of diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration with a hemorrhagic component. It is effective in treating eye injuries, postoperative fibrinoid syndromes, thrombosis of the central retinal vein and its branches, occlusions of the central retinal artery and its branches.
