ATELECTASIS: CLINICAL AND ENDOSCOPIC COMPARISONS

Clinical and endoscopic comparisons were carried out in 156 patients with identified atelectasis. Bronchoscopy showed that 68.6% of cases had atelectasis due to bronchial obturation with a tumor, secretory plug or foreign body; 16.67% of cases were noted to have bronchial compression caused by external compression due to (as brought to light later) peribronchial tumor growth or to have bronchial compression due to enlarged lymph nodes. Bronchoscopy revealed no abnormalities in 14.7% of cases; during treatment these patients were found to have community-acquired pneumonia (12.2%) and infiltrative pulmonary tuberculosis (2.56%).
