The paper presents the classification of extracorporeal techniques according to their level of selectivity. Current selective and specific extracorporeal technologies are characterized; their advantages and disadvantages are described. Selective and specific extracorporeal technologies can be designed if it is precisely known that target-removed molecules or blood cells play a key role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Their introduction is reasonable if it leads to the increased efficiency and safety of extracorporeal treatment.
