Measurement of heart rate variability is an available technique for assessing the autonomic regulation of cardiac activity. In elderly patients with coronary heart disease, cardiac autonomic imbalance with sympathetic predominance due to reduced vagal tone is concurrent with both a history of myocardial infarction and with unstable angina.
